Government Grants for Solar Panels UK

Independently written
UK homes with solar — financial support exists but no general grant
There is no 'free solar grant' for most homeowners — but significant financial support does exist.

Can I get a government grant for solar panels?

There is NO general government grant for solar panels for most UK homeowners. However, significant financial support exists: 0% VAT on installation (saves £1,000–£1,600), Smart Export Guarantee (earn 4–15p/kWh for surplus), ECO4 scheme (free solar for qualifying low-income households), and the BUS grant (£7,500 toward a heat pump when combined with solar). Be cautious of companies advertising 'free government-funded solar' — this is usually misleading.

What Financial Support Actually Exists (2026)

1. 0% VAT (Available to EVERYONE)

What: Residential solar installations attract 0% VAT (reduced from 5% in April 2022). Saves: £1,000–£1,600 compared to the standard 20% VAT rate. Who qualifies: All UK homeowners installing solar on a residential property. Duration: Confirmed until at least March 2027. How to claim: Automatic — your installer charges 0% VAT on the invoice.

This is the most significant financial benefit for standard homeowners. It applies to: panels, inverter, battery, mounting, wiring, and labour.

2. Smart Export Guarantee (Available to EVERYONE with MCS)

What: Energy suppliers pay you for surplus solar electricity exported to the grid. Earns: 4–15p per kWh exported = £80–£300/year. Who qualifies: Any home with MCS-certified solar + smart meter. How to claim: Register with a participating SEG supplier after installation.

SEG is not a grant — it is an ongoing income stream for the life of your system. Over 25 years: £2,000–£7,500 in total export income.

0% VAT + SEG = significant financial support even without a 'grant'
0% VAT saves £1,000-£1,600. SEG earns £2,000-£7,500 over 25 years. No grant needed for strong ROI.

3. ECO4 Scheme (Low-Income Households ONLY)

What: Free energy efficiency improvements (potentially including solar) for qualifying low-income and vulnerable households. Who qualifies: Households receiving means-tested benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, etc.) with EPC D, E, F, or G property. What it covers: Primarily insulation and heating. Solar is eligible but lower priority. How to apply: Contact your energy supplier, local council, or Simple Energy Advice (gov.uk). Duration: ECO4 runs until March 2026. Successor schemes expected.

Important: ECO4 is NOT available to most homeowners. It targets the most vulnerable households. If someone tells you 'everyone qualifies for free solar' — they are misleading you.

4. Boiler Upgrade Scheme (Heat Pump + Solar Combo)

What: £7,500 toward an air source heat pump. Who qualifies: UK homeowners (England/Wales) replacing a fossil fuel heating system. How it works with solar: Install solar panels (0% VAT) + heat pump (BUS grant). Combined system cost after grant: £7,000–£16,000. Combined savings: £1,200–£2,000/year. How to apply: Your MCS-certified heat pump installer applies on your behalf.

The BUS grant is not specifically for solar — but combining solar with a heat pump creates the best possible energy setup. The grant makes the heat pump affordable, and solar provides the free electricity to run it.

Solar + heat pump with BUS grant — the best combined package
Solar (0% VAT) + heat pump (£7,500 BUS grant) = the most financially supported energy combination.

What Does NOT Exist

These are NOT available in the UK (despite what some adverts claim):

  • A general 'free solar panel grant' for all homeowners — this does not exist
  • Government-funded solar panel installation for everyone — only ECO4 (very targeted)
  • A grant that covers 50%+ of solar panel costs for standard homeowners — this does not exist
  • The 'Solar Panel Grant Scheme 2026' — if you see this advertised, it is likely a lead generation scam
  • Free solar panels from the energy companies — leased panels (rent-a-roof) are NOT free; you lose most of the benefit

If someone contacts you offering 'free government solar panels,' be sceptical. Check with Ofgem, Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133), or gov.uk before engaging. Report suspected scams to Trading Standards.

The Real Financial Case (No Grant Needed)

Solar panels do NOT need a grant to be a great investment:

4kW system financial summary: - Cost: £5,500–£8,000 (0% VAT) - Annual savings: £580–£820 (electricity + SEG) - Payback: 8–12 years - 25-year net profit: £6,000–£12,000 - ROI: 100–200%

Compare to other investments at similar risk: - Cash ISA (4%): 67% over 25 years - Premium Bonds (1.4%): 42% over 25 years - Solar panels: 100–200% over 25 years — tax-free

Solar does not need a grant because the ROI is already strong. The 0% VAT and SEG income are sufficient support. A grant would make it even better — but its absence does not undermine the investment case.

Solar delivers strong savings without any grant — 0% VAT + SEG is enough
Solar pays for itself in 8-12 years without any grant — 0% VAT and SEG are the support you need.
