Solar and Economy 7

Independently written
Solar Economy 7
Economy 7 was designed for storage heaters. With solar, you may not need it.

Should I keep Economy 7 with solar?

Economy 7 gives cheap overnight electricity (9-12p/kWh) and expensive daytime (28-32p/kWh). With solar panels: your daytime electricity is FREE from solar — making Economy 7's expensive day rate irrelevant. Should you switch? YES in most cases. Switch to: (1) FLAT-RATE TARIFF — 24.5p/kWh all day. Solar covers daytime, flat rate covers evening. No penalty for daytime use. (2) OCTOPUS FLUX — cheap overnight (buy), premium daytime export (sell). Perfect for solar + battery. (3) OCTOPUS GO — 7.5p overnight for battery/EV charging, standard rate otherwise. KEEP ECONOMY 7 ONLY IF: you have storage heaters AND no battery. Otherwise: switch and save £100-£300/yr more.
