Solar and Hydrogen UK

Can solar panels produce hydrogen?
Solar panels can produce green hydrogen via electrolysis — splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using solar electricity. HOME USE: NOT currently viable. Electrolysers are expensive (£10,000+), hydrogen storage is complex, and efficiency is low (30-40% round-trip vs 85-90% for batteries). COMMERCIAL/INDUSTRIAL: Growing — solar farms paired with electrolysers produce green hydrogen for transport, industry, and grid storage. UK hydrogen trials: HyNet (North West), H21 (Leeds), SGN (Scotland). FUTURE: Hydrogen boilers (100% hydrogen-ready by 2026-2028). 20% hydrogen blend in gas grid (trials completed). Hydrogen fuel cells for backup power. For now: batteries are 2-3x more efficient than hydrogen for home storage. Watch this space for 2030+.
