Why can't I eliminate the standing charge?

The standing charge covers: grid maintenance, meter costs, and your connection to the electricity network. Even if you use zero grid electricity, you pay for the connection. It's set by Ofgem, not your consumption.

Can I go off-grid to avoid it?

Technically possible but impractical: you'd need a very large solar + battery system (20kWh+ battery) and a backup generator for winter. Costs £20,000-£50,000. The standing charge (£223/yr) doesn't justify this.

What about dual-fuel standing charges?
