What are solar microgrids?

Solar microgrids are local energy networks where multiple homes or buildings share solar electricity: HOW IT WORKS: Solar panels on multiple roofs feed into a shared local network. Smart systems distribute electricity where it's needed most. Surplus is shared between connected homes before exporting to the grid. UK STATUS: Emerging — regulatory sandbox trials underway (Ofgem Innovation). Projects in Bristol, Oxford, London, and rural communities. Not yet mainstream for residential. BENEFITS: (1) Higher self-consumption (70-90% community-wide vs 35-50% individual). (2) Lower bills (20-40% reduction). (3) Shared battery costs. (4) Community resilience during outages. CHALLENGES: Regulatory framework still developing, complex metering, fair billing systems needed. Timeline: expected residential availability 2028-2030.
