Octopus publishes no price and no price range for solar installation. Their page offers finance and ‘flexible payment options’ but no figures at all — not a from-price, not a per-kWp rate, not a typical system cost.

That is not unusual. Almost every UK installer quotes only after a survey, because roof access, scaffolding and electrical work genuinely vary. But it does mean you cannot compare Octopus against anyone else without requesting a quote first.

What to do about it: get the Octopus quote, then get two more from independent MCS-certified installers, and compare on the same basis:

Cost per kWp installed — the only number that lets you compare different system sizes fairly
Battery cost per kWh — quoted separately, not bundled into a single headline figure
Scaffolding — itemised, because it is the line that most often explains a price gap
What inverter — microinverters cost more than a string inverter and behave differently under shading
Panel make and wattage — 455W is a normal current spec; check what the others quote

Where Buying From Your Energy Supplier Genuinely Helps

There is a real argument for buying solar from Octopus specifically, and it is not the panels — it is the tariff integration.

Octopus runs the widest range of solar-relevant export and time-of-use tariffs in the UK market: Outgoing Octopus, Prime Outgoing, Agile Outgoing, Flux and Intelligent Flux. If you intend to use one of those, having the installation and the tariff with the same supplier removes coordination friction — particularly for Flux, which requires you to be on both an Octopus import and export tariff.

Where it helps:

One organisation for install, export MPAN, tariff and support
Battery-plus-tariff optimisation is genuinely easier when both sit with one supplier
An established company with published warranties and multiple accreditations

Where it may not:

No published pricing means no way to benchmark without asking
A supplier-installer has no reason to tell you a competitor is cheaper
You can use an Octopus export tariff with panels installed by anyone — you are not required to buy the installation from them to access the tariffs

That last point matters and is frequently misunderstood. Octopus accepts solar installed by any MCS-certified installer for its export tariffs. Choosing a different installer does not lock you out of Outgoing, Flux or Agile.

How to Compare Octopus Against an Independent Installer

Ask every quote, including the Octopus one, for the same six things:

Total installed cost, with scaffolding shown as a separate line
System size in kWp and the panel make, model and wattage
Inverter type - microinverters, string inverter or optimisers - and why that choice for your roof
Battery capacity in kWh with its own price, not bundled into the total
Estimated annual generation in kWh, and the assumptions behind it
Warranty terms in writing: panels, inverter, battery and workmanship are four separate things
