What are perovskite solar panels?

Perovskite solar cells are the most exciting development in solar technology: EFFICIENCY: lab records of 33.9% (tandem perovskite-silicon) vs 26.8% for silicon alone. Commercial target: 28-30% (vs 20-22% for current panels). COST: potentially 50% cheaper to manufacture — perovskite is made from abundant, cheap materials. FORM FACTOR: can be printed on flexible, lightweight substrates — solar on windows, walls, vehicles. CURRENT STATUS: Not yet available for home installation. Durability challenges (degradation in moisture and UV). Expected commercial availability: 2028-2030 for tandem cells on existing silicon panels. SHOULD YOU WAIT? No — current silicon panels are excellent (20-22% efficient, 25-year warranty, proven). Install now and benefit from 25 years of savings. Perovskite will be an upgrade option in 5-10 years.
