Solar Panels for Backup Power

Independently written
Solar backup power with battery
Backup power requires a battery with EPS capability — standard solar stops during outages.

Can solar panels provide backup power?

Standard UK solar systems do NOT provide backup power — they disconnect during grid outages (anti-islanding safety). For backup power, you need a battery with Emergency Power Supply (EPS) capability: Tesla Powerwall (whole-home backup, £5,500-£7,500), GivEnergy (partial backup via EPS port, £4,000-£5,500), or Fox ESS (partial backup, £3,500-£5,000). Cost for adding backup to existing solar: £4,000-£8,500 depending on battery and configuration.
