Can solar panels power an electric boiler?

Solar panels can power an electric boiler, but the maths is poor: an electric boiler uses 8,000-12,000 kWh/year for heating, while a 4kW solar system generates only 4,000 kWh (and mostly in summer when you need least heating). Solar covers only 10-20% of electric boiler demand in winter. The better option: replace the electric boiler with an air source heat pump (3-4x more efficient) powered by solar. This reduces heating costs by 60-80%.
