Half-Cut Solar Cells

Half-cut cells
Half-cut cells: 2-5% more efficient and better shade tolerance than full-size cells.

What are half-cut solar cells?

Half-cut cell technology: each solar cell is cut in half (from 6x6 inches to 6x3 inches), doubling the number of cells per panel. Benefits: (1) LOWER RESISTIVE LOSSES — half the current per cell = less energy lost as heat. Result: 2-5% more output. (2) BETTER SHADE TOLERANCE — the panel operates in two independent halves. If the bottom half is shaded, the top half continues at full output (unlike full-cell panels where one shaded cell affects the entire string). (3) BETTER HOT WEATHER PERFORMANCE — lower operating temperature from reduced resistive heating. (4) HIGHER POWER — half-cut panels typically achieve 400-430W (vs 370-400W for full-cell). STATUS: Most panels manufactured 2024-2026 use half-cut cells as standard — it's no longer a premium feature. If you're getting quotes: ask for panels with half-cut cells (most will be).
