DNO Notification for Solar Panels

Do I need to notify the DNO about solar panels?
Every UK solar installation must notify the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before connecting to the grid. Under 3.68kW: G98 notification (instant, no approval needed). Over 3.68kW: G99 application (DNO has 11 working days to respond, usually automatic approval). Your MCS-certified installer handles all DNO paperwork — you do not need to contact the DNO directly. This is a standard part of every solar installation.
G98 vs G99: Simple Explanation
G98 (under 3.68kW): - Simple notification — installer sends a form to the DNO - No approval needed — system connects immediately - No waiting period - Most 3kW residential systems use G98
G99 (3.68kW to 50kW): - Application — installer submits to the DNO before installation - DNO has 11 working days to respond - Most applications approved automatically - Rarely: connection study needed (45 days, free) - Most 4kW+ residential systems use G99
Your involvement: NONE. Your MCS installer handles all DNO paperwork as part of their standard service.

Who Is Your DNO?
Your DNO depends on your location:
- UK Power Networks: London, South East, East of England
- National Grid (NGED): Midlands, South West, Wales
- Northern Powergrid: North East, Yorkshire
- SP Energy Networks: Central Scotland, North West England
- SSE Networks: North of Scotland
- Electricity North West: Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria
- NIE Networks: Northern Ireland
You do not need to know your DNO — your installer identifies and contacts them automatically.
