What Is MCS Certification? Why It Matters

What is MCS certification for solar panels?
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the UK quality assurance scheme for solar panel installations. An MCS-certified installer has been assessed for competence, quality, and compliance with installation standards. MCS certification of your system is required to: receive Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments, receive certain government grants, and qualify for some green mortgage products. Always use an MCS-certified installer — it is the single most important selection criterion.
What MCS Certifies
MCS certifies two things:
1. Installers (company certification): An MCS-certified installer has been independently assessed for: - Qualified electrician status (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent) - Solar PV specific training and competence - Compliance with relevant standards (IET Wiring Regulations, G98/G99) - Quality management systems - Public liability and professional indemnity insurance - Consumer protection (complaints procedure, warranty obligations) - Regular audits (annual or more frequent)
2. Products (product certification): MCS-certified solar panels and inverters have been independently tested to meet: - IEC 61215 (panel performance and durability) - IEC 61730 (panel safety) - IEC 62109 (inverter safety) - BS EN 61000 (electromagnetic compatibility)
When both installer AND products are certified: The completed installation receives an MCS certificate — a document that proves the system meets UK quality standards.

Why MCS Certification Matters
Without MCS certification, you CANNOT:
- Receive Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments — losing £80–£300 per year in export income for 25 years
- Qualify for ECO4 funding or other government renewable energy schemes
- Access some green mortgage products that require certified installations
- Guarantee that the installation meets UK electrical and safety standards
- Have confidence that the installer will honour their warranty obligations
- Verify that the panels and inverter meet international quality standards
- Transfer a meaningful certification document to a future buyer of your property
The financial impact of losing SEG alone: - 25 years × £80–£300/year = £2,000–£7,500 lost - This is the cost of using a non-MCS installer — often MORE than you 'save' on a cheaper quote

How to Verify MCS Certification
Two ways to check:
- Visit mcscertified.com — search by company name, postcode, or certificate number. Free and public.
- Ask the installer directly — request their MCS certificate number and verify it online before signing any contract.
Red flags: - Cannot provide an MCS certificate number - Says they are 'in the process of applying' for MCS - Offers a significantly cheaper quote (may be cutting corners that MCS prevents) - Is not found on the MCS register when you search
If an installer is not MCS-certified, do not use them — regardless of price. The certification exists to protect you.

What Your MCS Certificate Includes
After installation, your MCS-certified installer provides:
- MCS Installation Certificate: Confirms the system meets MCS standards. Includes: installer details, installation address, system specifications, and certificate number.
- Handover Pack: Panel datasheets, inverter manual, warranty documents, and user guide.
- Electrical Installation Certificate: Confirms compliance with IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
- DNO Notification Confirmation: Proof that the Distribution Network Operator was notified of the generation connection.
- G98/G99 Declaration: Proof of grid connection compliance.
Keep all of these documents permanently. You will need them for: - SEG registration - Insurance claims - Property sale documentation - Any future warranty claims
