Solar on Asbestos Roofs

Asbestos roofs cannot support solar panels — re-roof first or go ground-mounted.

Can I put solar panels on an asbestos roof?

You CANNOT safely install solar panels on an asbestos cement roof. Why: (1) Drilling into asbestos releases dangerous fibres — illegal without licensed removal. (2) Asbestos sheets are brittle and cannot support panel weight. (3) No MCS installer will fit panels to asbestos. Your options: (1) RE-ROOF: Remove asbestos (licensed contractor, £5,000-£15,000 depending on size) and replace with modern roofing. Then install solar normally. (2) GROUND-MOUNTED SOLAR: Install panels in your garden on frames — no roof contact needed. Cost: £6,000-£12,000 for 4-6kW. (3) OVER-ROOF: Some specialist systems mount a new roof OVER asbestos (encapsulating it) — then panels go on the new roof. Common on garages and outbuildings.
