Solar Panels and Neighbours

Your right to install solar is protected by permitted development. Neighbours cannot block it.

Can neighbours stop me installing solar?

Your right to install solar panels: (1) PERMITTED DEVELOPMENT — most residential solar needs NO planning permission. Neighbours cannot object. (2) NO RIGHT TO LIGHT — neighbours have no legal right to prevent shading of your panels (unless you have an established easement). (3) GLARE — modern panels have anti-reflective coatings and produce less glare than a greenhouse. Complaints are extremely rare. (4) PARTY WALL — solar panels on YOUR roof do not require a party wall agreement (they don't affect the shared wall). (5) NOISE — panels are silent, inverters inaudible beyond your property. Common neighbour concern: 'will they reduce my property value?' — No evidence supports this. If anything, solar on neighbouring properties normalises the technology and increases area desirability.
