Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Most UK residential solar installations need NO planning permission under permitted development rights. The rules: (1) Panels must not protrude more than 200mm from the roof surface. (2) Must not extend above the highest part of the roof (excluding chimneys). (3) Must not face a highway if within a conservation area. (4) Panels must be removed when no longer needed. Exceptions that DO require planning: listed buildings (always), conservation areas (front-facing only), flats/maisonettes, ground-mounted systems over 9m², Article 4 direction areas. Your installer handles the DNO notification (G99) which is separate from planning. Approval rate for solar planning applications: 95%+.
